DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES
Cromagnon is a collaborative project by myself and Raymond de Vries. The work operates as a photographic investigation into the state of being of Western man. Cromagnon insists on creating images that return to the most basic conditions of being human—hence the reference to the Cromagnon. The method consists solely of exercises, there is also a clear form of arbitrariness. Subjects are approached through eccentric movement, without the intention—or the possibility—of reaching a centre, conclusion, or final image.
This series was made after the death of our mothers. The work addresses a moment where language collapses and explanation becomes impossible. What remains are traces, gestures, and physical presence—forms of evidence without testimony. The project does not attempt to speak for the dead, but stays with what is left behind when care, voice, and narrative disappear.
